Overview

The 47 County Gender Datasheets provide a comprehensive, harmonised evidence base on gender equality and women’s empowerment across all counties in Kenya. Developed through a collaborative process led by the Council of Governors (CoG) and the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) in partnership with the State Department for Gender Affairs and Affirmative Action (SDGAAA), and with technical and financial support from UN Women, the datasheets respond to persistent gaps in the availability and use of gender data at the county level.

Anchored within Kenya’s devolved governance framework, the datasheets will support counties in planning, budgeting, and monitoring progress under the third generation County Integrated Development Plans (CIDPs) 2022–2027. Each county datasheet presents gender relevant indicators across seven thematic areas: demographics; health; education; economic empowerment; gender-based violence; access to basic services (water, sanitation, energy); and governance and decision-making.

Overall, the datasheets reveal persistent gender inequalities, marked inter-county disparities, and an urgent need for targeted, data-driven interventions. Through standardising indicators and improving subnational comparability, the 47 County Gender Datasheets strengthen accountability, enable evidence-informed policy design, and provide an essential baseline for tracking gender equality outcomes under devolution.
The data sources used to develop these datasheets are as highlighted below:
