2025 Remittances Household Survey Report

The 2025 Remittances Household Survey (RHS) was carried out by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) in partnership with the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), FSD-Kenya, and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). Implemented in two phases, the survey began with a pilot in June 2025 to establish a sampling frame, followed by a 30-day data collection exercise in August 2025 covering 4,440 households. Its primary goal was to go beyond what is typically captured through formal reporting systems like the ITRS, gathering richer data on remittance flows including their magnitude, channels used, sources and destinations, cost, utilization, and the demographic profiles of both senders and recipients.
The survey findings revealed that Kenyan households received KSh 931.8 billion in remittance inflows during the reference period of June 2024 to May 2025, with cash transfers accounting for 91 percent and in-kind transfers making up the remaining 9 percent. On the outflow side, Kenyan residents sent a total of KSh 40.5 billion abroad, with cash comprising 89.5 percent of that figure. These numbers firmly position Kenya as a net-recipient country, with inflows exceeding outflows by more than twentyfold.
