Earlier today, Kenya National Bureau of Statistics launched its fifth Strategic Plan for the period 2023 to 2027. The Strategic Plan outlines Kenya National Bureau of Statistics’ strategic focus areas on data accuracy, integrity, and timely dissemination to enable evidence-based decision-making across various sectors of the economy.
KNBS Director General Dr. Macdonald Obudho affirmed the Bureau’s commitment to continually produce and disseminate quality statistics to match needs of users of official statistics to support research, planning, monitoring and evaluation across all sectors. “Quality Statistics for Better Lives” or “Takwimu za Kuaminika” in Swahili is the hashtag newvision underpinning the new Strategic Plan for the period 2023 to 2027.
Kenya National Bureau of Statistics has also developed the Kenya Statistical Code of Practice (KeSCoP) and established a Data Science Training Center. KeSCoP will act as a technical and ethical standard instrument for continuous improvement of the quality of official statistics; while the Data Science Training Center aims to explore the use of new methods in statistics production and dissemination such as data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning.
The crucial role played by development partners in actualizing the KNBS mandate was also highlighted. The World Bank, Statistics Sweden, ONS-UK among others were part of the launch. Among the icons in the development of statistics in Africa was Professor Ben Kiryegera who lauded Kenya National Bureau of Statistics for being forward thinking on matters statistics.
The launch was officiated by the Economic Planning Secretary, Mr. Timothy Gakuu who represented the Principal Secretary, State Department for Economic Planning Mr. James Muhati, CBS.
