Consumer Price Indices and Inflation Rates for April 2020

Kenya National Bureau of Statistics hereby releases the monthly Consumer Price Indices (CPI) and rates of inflation, for April, 2020. The CPI increased by 0.86 per cent from 107.00 in March 2020 to 107.92 in April 2020. The overall year on year inflation in April 2020 stood at 5.62 per cent from a revised 5.51 per cent in March 2020.

These numbers are based on the new CPI whose base period is February 2019. They were generated from a survey of retail prices that targeted a basket of household consumption goods and services that was derived from the results of the 2015/16 Kenya Integrated Household Budget Survey (KIHBS). The retail price survey was conducted during the second and third weeks of the month, with prices being obtained from selected retail outlets located in 50 data collection zones, 14 of which are in Nairobi and 36 in other urban areas.

ECONOMIC SURVEY 2020

The economic activity in the domestic economy remained vibrant in 2019 although the performance was slower relative to 2018. The real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 5.4 per cent in 2019 compared to a growth of 6.3 per cent in 2018. The growth, albeit slower than 2018 was spread across all sectors of the economy but was more pronounced in service-oriented sectors.

The slower growth in 2019 was also reflected in other macroeconomic indicators. The annual inflation increased from 4.7 per cent in 2018 to 5.2 per cent in 2019. The upsurge in inflation was mainly due to less favourable weather conditions in first half of 2019. Weather conditions gradually improved over the remaining part of the year causing drops in food as well as overall inflation. Prudent macroeconomic policies as well as a relatively stable Kenya shilling against the major currencies especially the US dollar helped in containing the inflation.
