The 2024 Foreign Investment Survey is being implemented by KNBS in collaboration with the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) and Kenya Investment Authority (KenInvest). This is the eight is this series of surveys which began in 2010. The main aim of the Foreign Investment Surveys is to update the Balance of Payments (BOP) and International Investment Position (IIP) Statistics for Kenya by highlighting the level of inward and outward investment, particularly on Foreign Direct Investment. It also highlights the level and composition of these financial assets and liabilities by destination and source country.
Respondents for the FIS 2024 are enterprises which are resident in Kenya (i.e they were registered or incorporated in Kenya and have been operating in Kenya for more than one year) and which have foreign shareholding, have debt obligations to non-residents (inward investment), or have invested in enterprises abroad, have claims in form of debt instruments on non-residents (outward investments), engaged in transactions in international trade in goods and services or any other cross border transactions with non-residents.
The survey seeks information on transactions in financial assets and liabilities with non-residents during 2023 and positions for years ending 2022 and 2023; international trade in goods and services for the same period, employment and investor perception on the business environment.
Data collection commenced on 11th November,2024 and is expected to run up to February,2025 with a break during the Christmas and New Year festivities. The enterprises are spread across Nairobi, Kiambu, Kajiado, Nakuru, Machakos, Murang’a, Kisumu, Uasin Gishu, Kakamega, Mombasa, Kilifi and Kwale. The field personnel comprise of 42 Research Assistants and 16 Supervisors drawn from both KNBS and CBK as well as Coordinators drawn from the three collaborating institutions.
We appeal to our respondents to participate in this important exercise by providing data as required in the FIS 2024 Questionnaire and provide the relevant Financial Statements relating to the years ending 2022 and 2023. The Bureau guarantees confidentiality of the information provided as stipulated in Clause 22 of the Statistics Act, 2006. Moreover, the field personnel are under oath, not to disclose the information provided. The data will strictly be used for statistical purposes in line with the outlined objectives, key among them being to update the BOP and IIP Statistics as well as other related statistics. The report generated will be disseminated as statistical aggregates to ensure that no individual company information is divulged.
