CPI AND INFLATION RATES FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER 2007

The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics is pleased to release the Consumer Price Indices (CPI) and inflation rates for the month of November 2007, for your information and use. This data is generated through monthly data collection from retail outlets in 13 urban centres in Kenya . The data is perceived to be representative of the spending behaviour of Kenyan urban households. The price data is collected in the second and third week of the month of review in the selected retail outlets. This is in order to maintain consistency in price variations .

Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 1.4 per cent from 229.99 points in October 2007 to 233.28 points in November 2007. Month-on-month overall inflation rate accelerated from 10.6 per cent in October 2007 to 11.8 per cent in November 2007. On the other hand, month-on-month underlying inflation rate which excludes food items from the CPI basket increased from 5.2 per cent in October 2007 to 5.8 per cent in November 2007.

Table 1 shows percentage changes in indices of broad categories of items in the month of November 2007 compared to October 2007 (previous month) and the month of November 2007 compared to November 2006 (previous year).

Food and non-alcoholic drinks’ index increased by 1.8 per cent in November 2007 compared to October 2007 as a result of increases in the price of English potatoes, rice, and bread. On average, the price of a 400g loaf of bread increased by 3.4 percent from Ksh. 29.36 in October 2007 to Ksh. 30.45 in November 2007. A Kilogram of rice grade 2 increased by 7.1 per cent from Ksh. 45.86 to KSh.49.09 while the price of English potatoes increased by 3.35 per cent from Ksh 26.40 to Ksh. 27.29 per kilogram .

The transport and communication index increased by 4.5 per cent in November 2007 compared to October 2007 due to increases in the matatu fares and car services. On Average, Matatu fares within town increased by 10.3 per cent in November 2007 compared to October 2007.

Table 2 shows the CPI movement from January 2007 to November 2007. The CPI gives price movements of items in the basket of consumer goods and services .

The CPI has increased from 220.72 points in January 2007 to 233.28 points in November 2007, a rise of 5.7 per cent.
