CPI AND INFLATION RATES FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY 2004
The Kenya CPI increased by 1.8 per cent from 151.8 points in January to 154.6 points in February 2004. During the same period, month-on-month overall inflation rate rose from 9.1 per cent to 9.9 per cent. The month on month underlying inflation rate also increased from 2.6 per cent in January to 4.5 per cent in February 2004.

Table 1 shows percentage changes in overall (Kenya) indices in February 2004 compared to January 2004 (previous month).

Food and non-alcoholic drink index rose by 1.4 per cent in February 2004 compared to January 2004. This was mainly as a result of increase in the prices of cabbages, maize grain, maize flour and cooking fat.

Transport and Communications index increased by 16.2 per cent. This was due to rise in public transport fares. Nairobi lower income group index recorded the highest increase from 125.6 points in January 2004 to 158.5 points in February 2004 a rise of 26.2 per cent. In the rest of urban areas, transport index rose by 14.7 per cent from 146.7 points in January 2004 to 168.2 points in February 2004.

Fuel and Power index increased by 2.5 per cent in February compared with January as a result of increase in the price of paraffin.
